The sport’s history is still quite short, since it originated in Lexica’s board meeting in 2016.
The board of Lexica was trying to come up with an event for Wappu. Something, that would combine sports, picnicking and drinking. There are many games that match this criteria, but none of them mix the two beloved student sports, beer pong and kyykkä. In the meeting, the actual contents of the game were not discussed, but the name kyrpong was mentioned. Afterwards the sport itself was invented, which then took on the name.
After the meeting, a so-called kyrpong team retreated to plan out the sport. There are no official minutes left of said meeting. The team’s goal was to launch the sport before Wappu weeks.
First Kyrpong World Championships were held during Wappu 2019. The event was immediately a success, earning TREY’s “Potential of the year” -award. It was clear, that kyrpong had come to stay.
The next tournament was held in September of 2021 in a smaller scale as National Championships due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The winners of the tournament were awarded with tickets to the World Championships 2022, which were held as a part of Teemutour on 28th of April 2022.
